Could Aiko's B.R.A.I.N.S software be adapted to other purposes? Empty Could Aiko's B.R.A.I.N.S software be adapted to other purposes?

Post  Quixote1 Thu Oct 15, 2009 11:13 am

Hello,
I've been involved in home automation as a hobby for quite some time and I was wondering how difficult it would be to adapt Aiko's software to that type of application. It could be a great thing to help develop the software in advance of being able to house it in an appropriate robot body. The system could be tweaked to make it more user friendly so that people could change settings such as the voice and how the AI would react to some phrases. This way, if Aiko is ever readily available to the public to purchase, "she" would be customizable and flexible to the needs of different users.

An example of a standalone system (for use without the android) would be one that uses webcams to track occupants of a home and know who is in what room. This system could be used for security and entry access, as well as certain other benefits such as knowing the lighting preferences of certain individuals and turning them on at specific levels when the user asks for the lights on.

Designing the perfect android body is something that will take many years if not decades, but it's an obstacle that can be put aside for a while until the proper funds and technology is available. It would be a shame to slow the development of Aiko for these reasons. A beautiful and perfectly mobile robot without a well developed "B.R.A.I.N." is still just a fancy Robosapien.

Trung, what do you feel about the current state of your software? Is hardware speed the only factor holding you back from achieving a believable A.I. system? Does it have the potential for user-friendliness and adaptability?

Thanks for reading.

Could Aiko's B.R.A.I.N.S software be adapted to other purposes? Empty Good idea

I think that you've hit on a great idea and one behind the developers of B.R.A.I.Ns should consider.

Lets look at this from a technical view. This being the hardware. The hardware for a robotic body for a machine like Aiko needs to be limited and advanced, possibly more advanced than anything currently on the market. This is because there is limited space, the space being limited to an 'average' sized human. Trung could probably build a perfectly realistic platform, with adequate cooling systems, memory etc in a few years with current materials. But the components are currently so bulky that this form of Aiko would probably look more like Robbie the Robot.

In an automated house, car or whatever, this limitation suddenly disappears. Let's look at a house. In a new building development, the hardware could be wired in the walls, leaving no visible signs. In an older house, the central core could be an inocuous box in the corner. And let's face it, most house have some random thin in most rooms.

Next, lets look at the uses of B.R.A.I.Ns in this environment. It'd probably be easier to list what it COULDN'T be used for. Everything from a wake-up call, to being wired into the fridge to check your shopping list, to saving energy and money by automatically turning lights off when someone leaves a room.

Finally, lets look at the economic side. Although, granted, wiring up a house, particually a new one would be expensive, the later benefits would be incalcuable. People of the future would wonder how homes ran before B.R.A.I.Ns, much like many now can't imagine a world without cars, the internet or mobile phones. Also, as pointed out, the software could be developed for multiple users, adding to the end product which is ultimatly a program for Aiko. And most importantly, when Aiko is finally launched, it has an established reputation to build on, rather than the shock of something so radical and new. This idea is bold, innovatine and lucrative.

No B.R.A.I.Ner

Could Aiko's B.R.A.I.N.S software be adapted to other purposes? Empty Re: Could Aiko's B.R.A.I.N.S software be adapted to other purposes?

Hi,

Both of you have the right idea.

As for Aiko's peronality.... Aiko's have mine personality....
But you can change her database to make your own personality.... between 3000-5000..... I lost track of the personality.... from food, to color, music...etc.
Aiko Mass Production I can just leave those blank, and you can fill them in each day....

Yes, you are correct, with the current technology it is very hard to fit all in one "human form" especially with a home budget.... can't really buy any fancy hardware.
Computer and sensors and micro controller need to be made smaller.

As for the BRAINs software, they are many application for indoor and outdoor.

To name a few:
Face recognition: security for home or company.
Object recognition: for home use... medication or research lab.
Trace human: can be use to detect human in a room.... ie turn of light to save electric.... go green
reading: help the blind or people who can not read.
weather/news: airport.... or before going out.
Can control security alarm of your home, smoke , CO gas...etc. (just need to add few more sensors for that)
AI converstation/trandstation: help ESL student... or businesss people.
Businessman need to read document in english, but problem with language barrier.... show infront of a webcam.... have the brains software read it and do a rough translation....etc..

These are some of the application.....
It is valuable because all in ONE software.
The brains software can change the way we live in our home. Hopefully, it will make our life easier. Razz

Investor don't see it that way... they just want pay cheap and have everything.

Could Aiko's B.R.A.I.N.S software be adapted to other purposes? Empty progress

Post  Quixote1 Thu Oct 29, 2009 4:13 pm

I think that "Guest2" brought up some very valid points and we are both on the same wavelength. The forum admin. took our ideas even one step further and added an excellent list of possible applications.

With the current rate of technological development, it will not be long before Aiko's required hardware will be small enough, run efficiently and cool enough and be fast enough to perform all the tasks that we would expect of "her". The main limitations that are obvious to me are:
1) Man-hours: Le Trung seems to be very passionate about his project, pouring countless hours into it. He also has the intelligence to develop extremely impressive hardware and software. Unfortunately, even he needs time to live his own life, and I'm wondering how much time it would take him to adapt the B.R.A.I.N.S. to have the versatility that we are (and the general public would be) looking for. One idea that could give us a shortcut is to give Aiko/B.R.A.I.N.S. the ability to use existing home automation software packages in conjuction with it's own abilities. The HA software solution that I use is Girder 5 by Promixis, whcih enables me to trigger events with my hardware with triggers and conditions from other hardware or software. You can Google for that software if you want to investigate it further. If B.R.A.I.N.S. had access to the variables in Girder, it could look at things like how light it is outside, whether certain lights are on, if the music is playing in a certain zone, etc.
2) Money: This is an obvious limitation for any of our projects and pretty much goes without saying. One solution that I can think of is to continue with the development/adaptation of B.R.A.I.N.S. for home automation use and experimentation and offer it as shareware. Users could pay an initial license fee, with nominal additional charges for new version releases that have new features and other improvements. All profits could be used towards buying new hardware and to help Le Trung with his coffee expenses for all of his late nights writing the software. Wink
